So I mentioned previously that the kitchen project has been pretty long and drawn out. Part of the reason is lack of time to get things done, the other part is just my general indecisiveness. A couple of weeks ago I painted the kitchen a deep peacock blue, Martha Stewart’s Plumage. It’s a vast improvement over the dingy yellow that was there before, but I just can’t decide on the color of the trim. In the first round I painted it white and it looked like this:
Nice, but something was bothering me. It looked a little more modern than I was going for and I felt like my eye was being overly drawn to the trim. Maybe I watch too much Boardwalk Empire, but it’s a great reference for the time period in which our house was built. I noticed on the show that most of the trim that isn’t dark wood is painted the same as, or a shade of the wall color. Plus, I’ve always been a fan of Martha’s pink guest house where everything is painted the exact same shade of pink. Here are a few other images that feature painted trim.
Lovely, no? So I thought, what the heck, I’ll try it. I figured I’d start with one portion and not go all out, it’s a little messy but here’s a sample:
It’s kind of hard to tell because I didn’t properly finish it, but I’m not sure. Part of me likes it and I think when the inside edges of the doorway are finished it will look nice. The other part of me is really bothered by that skinny strip of blue to the right of the tile. Is it weird? Should I go for it and paint the whole shebang? I need opinions. Sound off in the comments people, I need your help!
Oh, and just so you know, the floor is going, going GONE! It’s gross and we’re planning some awesome black and white hex tile for it. We just need to decide if we’re going to attempt the DIY on that. Another thing you should ignore is the disgusting beige switch plates. We’ll be fixing those too.

Go for it, I think the matching trim is going to look lovely!
What about painting the trim a shade or two lighter than the wall color, similar to the difference between the two shades in the first picture? And for the record, the blue next to the white tile doesn’t look super awkward, at least in pictures.
I also like the slightly lighter color of the first picture but I have never painted trim so I don’t have a real reference.
But holy crap I cannot wait to see the black and white hex floors!
Hmmmm. I think I like the white, actually. It’s a little “younger”. I can see the appeal of the same-color trim, except all the examples are, apparently from rooms in ancient English country mansions. It’s a pretty formal look. With black and white hex floors– (wow! I haven’t been keeping up!) I would do white trim.
But don’t ask me. I’m just a renter.
Good point Laura, those images are a little grander than my humble abode. This was actually the inspiration image for the color — http://pinterest.com/pin/86835099034755793/ Though again, not a great comparison in kitchen style. Today I’m actually thinking of changing the color all together, to a lighter shade of blue like this — http://pinterest.com/pin/86835099034955434/
The peacock blue walls look beautiful in the kitchen. Neil and I feel that when you change the flooring to black and white hex, the white trim and dark countertops will compliment it well. That’s just the opinion of two people who are closer to the age of the house! If you need help, you know where we are.
I vote white. Like the peacock walls. Are they changing already? Say it ain’t so!
I think they are! Just came home with 3 new samples so we’ll see.
I love the peacock color you chose (we just did a Martha in my bathroom and I LOVE it, Persimmon.) I see your point about the white but I think the trim needs a bit of contrast, even if you stick with a blue. Another difference I notice in the sample pics is that they don’t connect to another room, so it looks very unified. In your kitchen, you’re going to always see that back mudroom (?) and I do like the white as a transition there. The floor’s going to be great.
The room in the back will actually be painted along with the kitchen, we just need to take some wallpaper down. And I do like the peacock but I just think maybe it’s drawing too much attention to the walls. It’s also making the cabinets look pretty red which I’m not digging. So I think we’re going lighter. Stay tuned!
How come you dont have your web site viewable in mobile format? Can not view anything in my phone.
It should be viewable in mobile now! Let me know if you have any more problems.
I just bought this color to paint my little drawers that I use as a bedside table. I love it!
